Keynote Speakers

Our Platinum Sponsors set the stage for two days of intensive education on day one of the conference.  Attendees heard from business leaders from AMCC, Freescale and IBM - sharing their visions for Power Architecture technology and for the many markets it plays in. On day two, Jim Bell, a leading scientist for Mars exploration, shared lessons learned from reaching for the stars every day - and sent attendees home inspiration to take your designs further.

Jim Bell

Associate Professor and Director of Graduate Studies, Astronomy Department
Cornell University

Dr. Bell is the lead scientist for the Pancam color imaging system on the NASA Mars Exploration Rovers Spirit and Opportunity, and is the author of the book "Postcards from Mars", a pictorial history of the rover missions. He has published many of his research results in major astronomy journals, is a frequent contributor to popular astronomy magazines and radio shows, and has edited a book about the Near Earth Asteroid Rendezvous mission. He is also a member of the science teams of the NASA Mars Pathfinder, Near Earth Asteroid Rendezvous (NEAR), Mars Odyssey Orbiter,  Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter missions and the 2009 Mars Science Laboratory rover mission teams. His studies primarily focus on the geology, geochemistry, and mineralogy of planets, asteroids, and comets using data obtained from telescopes and spacecraft missions.

Jim Kahle

IBM Fellow, Chief Architect and Director of Technology, Austin Design Center for the Cell Technology
IBM

Jim is an IBM Fellow with over 20 years of research and development experience in chip design. He is a renowned expert in the microprocessor industry for delivering break through designs. His current role is Chief Architect and Director of Technology for the Austin Based Design Center for the Cell Technology which is a partnership with IBM, Sony and Toshiba. He has been key to the definition of the Power Architecture and of the superscalar techniques used in IBM. Jim has been on the forefront of Dual Core designs, Asymetric Multiprocessors, Superscalar design, and SMT microarchitectures. He was a key designer for the RIOS I processor that launched IBM into the RS/6000 line of workstations and servers, was one of the founding members of the Somerset Design Center, Project Manager for the PowerPC 603 and follow on processors and was the Chief Architect for the POWER4 core.
